E Cape launches corruption hotline
11 April 2003
The Eastern Cape public will now be able to blow the whistle if they know of any person involved in corruption or any unlawful act.
The Interim Management Team (IMT) deployed in the province to rid it of irregular practices has launched an anti-corruption hotline to enable whistleblowers to come forward with information that could help bring culprits to book.
The hotline system comprises:
- A round-the-clock toll-free number available in English, IsiZulu and Afrikaans: 0800 203 249
- A toll-free fax number: 0800 007 788
- An e-mail address: imt@gobodo-hotline.com
- A postal address: Gobodo Fraud Hotline, Free-Post D298, Umhlanga Rocks 4320
According to the IMT, the line can also be used by any member of the public to pass on information that might assist the team in its ongoing investigations.
"It is the responsibility of all residents of this province to ensure a
well-oiled service delivery machinery, and we all need to join in our efforts," said team leader Muthanyi Ramaite, director-general in the department of public service and administration.
Other members of the team are Eastern Cape director-general Mvuyo Tom and the superintendent-general of the provincial treasury, Monde Tom.
The IMT is finalising a turnaround strategy for the provincial administration that will be presented to Cabinet later this month.
Meanwhile, the elite police unit the Scorpions arrested 18 government officials in a pre-dawn swoop in Port Elizabeth and East London on Thursday on charges of corruption and fraud. The suspects were employed in various government departments.
