The editors
Victor Selope-Thema (1932-1952). Selope Thema was the first editor of Bantu World.
Dr Jacob Nhlapo (1953-1957). Bantu World changed its name to The World during Nhlapo's stewardship. Nhlapo, a well-known educationalist, died in 1957, and for some time The World was without an editor.
MT Moerane (1962-1973). Moerane, a highly respected journalist, was head-hunted to edit the paper.
Percy Qoboza (1974-1980). Qoboza edited The World until it was banned in 1977, and later the Post, which closed down in 1980 following a bitter three-month wage strike by journalists and the general workforce. Qoboza was held in solitary confinement in 1977 shortly before The World was banned.
Joe Latakgomo (1981-1988). Latakgomo became the first editor of Sowetan when it converted from a free sheet to a daily newspaper.
Aggrey Klaaste (1988-1996). Klaaste pioneered
Sowetan's "Nation Building" concept during his editorship. In 1996, he was appointed editor-in-chief by the paper's new owners, New Africa Publications, a consortium headed by Dr Nthato Motlana. Klaaste still holds his figure-head position.
Mike Siluma (1996-2000). Siluma held the editorship until he was moved to New Africa Media, the newspaper's head office.
Chris More (2001 to date). More was appointed acting editor after Siluma's departure, and nearly a year later, has still not been confirmed in the position.
