Sasol's Qatar plant inaugurated
Posted Wed, 07 Jun 2006

Sasol's $950-million gas-to-liquids plant, a joint venture with Qatar's state-owned Qatar Petroleum, was inaugurated in Ras Laffan in Qatar on Tuesday.

The inauguration was made by the emir of Qatar, and the function was attended by SA's Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica.

The Oryx GTL plant will use some 350 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, and convert it to petrol. Already the two parties are looking to hike capacity to some 100 000 barrels of petrol a day.

The Oryx plant, 51- percent owned by Qatar Petroleum and 49-percent by Sasol, is the first time that SA firm's Fischer-Tropsch technology has been used outside the country.
